The word “energy” is used in many different ways. In physics, it is defined as the property of matter and radiation, which is manifest as a capacity to perform work (such as causing motion or the interaction of molecules).
Our utility companies define it as power derived from the utilization of physical or chemical resources, especially to provide light and heat or to work machines.
Speaking about people, we use it to describe the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity.
Those of us in holistic health and wellness work don’t really have a definition of the concept, however frequently we use it. Energy in hands-on healing is something that can be felt like magnetic attraction or repulsion. It can be a hot or cold sensation, tingling or vibration. Each of us feels it in a different way, and often the perception differs in different situations. We sense the energy in a room as friendly and inviting, or as dense and heavy. A group of people working together may use the same words and facial expressions, but the energy of the group can be inspiring and uplifting, or filled with suspicion and competition. How do we perceive that kind of energy?
It might be called a sixth sense; we are all born with it. Many of us were taught to deny this sense growing up in families where denial was as natural as breathing. I believe that this sixth sense is vital to our survival and wellbeing. We never lose it, and we can reclaim it at anytime in our lives. We simply have to start listening to our gut feelings and instincts again and trust that they are real and meaningful.
Those of us working with energy have been talking about a change in the energy on the planet. Something has shifted. It’s hard to put your finger on it or describe it, but we all agree: something feels different. Even science is in agreement. The electromagnetic shield of the earth is weakening, allowing more cosmic and solar radiation to enter and charge the magnetosphere, rather than being deflected.
Shifts like this have happened before. Living organisms accommodate them. Our bodies adapt on a cellular level. Much internal upgrading is taking place these days, and without our mental input. We might feel more tired, less energetic to get our usual work done. We might be more sleepy and desiring some time off. This is nothing to worry about.
It is most important now to practice self-acceptance and self-compassion during this shift. Be kind to yourself, so you can be genuinely kind to others. Trust your Inner Wisdom. Your body knew how to grow from one fertilized cell into a trillion-cell community, which is the “You” when you look in the mirror. Your body also has the wisdom to adapt to the New Energy.
Our bodies, our cells are much better equipped to deal with these changes than our mind. We are accustomed to evaluating, planning, and getting stuff done. It feels less scary to venture into unknown territory with a map and travel itinerary in hand. This time, we have neither itinerary nor map, and the new territory appears under our feet as we take the next step. Be kind to your mind as you relinquish the illusion of control. It is difficult to give up survival strategies that worked so well in the past. Yet that is exactly what we need to do. We have to trust in a Wisdom beyond the mind, call it what you may: God, Allah, YHWH, Source, Soul, All That Is, Creator, Higher Power, Inner Wisdom, the Dharma, the Tao.
“The end of the world for the caterpillar is the beginning of life for the butterfly.” We became experts in being caterpillars and found great comfort in our skills. Now we are called to start fresh as beginners and develop new skill sets for trusting our bodies and our Inner Wisdom, our Soul. We have to discard outmoded cultural teachings that separate us from our direct connection to this Inner Wisdom and Source. We have to trust again that we know what we know, even if we can’t explain it. Even when it goes against everything our society has taught us to believe in.
We do not have to define the indefinable to live and thrive within it. Allow the New Energy to work for you and through you by relaxing into it.
As Sir Paul McCartney sang decades ago:
“Let It Be!”
Wishing all of you a year of blessings and guidance from the Source Within!
